About

Lucia Stern, painter and printmaker

I am a painter and printmaker working in NYC. I display some of my work here.

Most of my prints are artist's proofs; the few editioned prints have all been placed with collectors.

Techniques

Carborundum
Prints made from plates built up with carborundum grit, which holds ink and gives rich, velvety tones.
À la poupée
Several colors applied by hand to a single plate with small rolled-up cloth "dolls" (poupées), so they print in one pass.
Drypoint
The plate is scratched directly with a sharp needle, raising a burr that holds ink and prints a soft, fuzzy line. Poly plates are used here instead of metal.
Silk aquatint
Silk or polyester fabric is adhered with acrylic and glue-like mediums to a thin, firm cardboard or plastic board. Once it is dry and tightly bonded, the surface is "painted" with acrylic medium, which acts as a resist: where the acrylic sits, no ink is held. A low-cost alternative to drypoint and other kinds of etching.
Silkscreen
Ink pushed through a fine mesh screen onto paper, with a stencil blocking the areas that should stay blank.
Etching with silkscreen
Mixed works layering intaglio etching with screen-printed color.
Watercolor prints
Watercolor printed on top of etchings, combining line and wash.
